Pesky Problem
Your potential guests can’t really envision your space.
The problem is, you assume your potential guests can imagine your space as well as you do. When you swipe through your photo reel, you know exactly how each photo fits together. Plus you’ve described the space in such detail in your listing’s description.
But if you handed the folks considering your space a pen and paper and asked them to sketch out the general layout, they wouldn’t know where to begin. And the inability to imagine how the space fits together makes it much harder to imagine a vacation in that space. So they close out of your listing and keep on scrolling.
Let's Try This
Bite-Size Solution
Add a floor plan image to your Airbnb listing’s photos.
Check out how one brilliant superhost has solved this problem. Claire, the owner of two Airbnbs in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has included a floor plan in both her listings. After getting a sense of what the interior looks like with the first set of pictures, the floor plan pops up in the photo reel. Immediately potential guests can understand how all of the picture puzzle pieces they’ve just seen actually fit together. They can imagine how their family or friends would use the space on their trip. And the likelihood of booking goes up.
Bonus tip: Copy one of Claire’s other strategies and annotate exterior photos to show potential guests exactly where your place is located. Notice how she helps guests understand where their suite is within the building and where the building itself sits in relation to the broader coastline.
Each of these photos is so much more effective than the written equivalent. While folks might skim over the details about being “on the second floor” or being “halfway down the coast,” the photos invoke immediate comprehension. Potential guests can close their eyes and envision exactly what to expect. (Also, are you seeing her cover photo?! How perfect is that? It provides an immediate sense of the spectacular beach proximity while also showing off the modern interior. What a fantastic hook.)

Here's Your First Step
Create an Airbnb floor plan of your space.
Don’t over think this step! Remember, done is better than perfect. You can create a little digital floor plan to export from a variety of softwares. A quick Google search for free floor plan creators is an easy way to start. Or just hop into Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Canva and start dragging and dropping shapes. Heck, you could even grab a pen and paper, make your sketch, snap a picture with your phone, and upload that. The handwritten nature of this would be endearing. The goal is simply to invite your guests to really understand your space, and start picturing their trip with you.
