Sound Familiar?
Pesky Problem
Your Airbnb is operating illegally. Maybe.
The uncomfortable truth is that you don’t really know. For many hosts, this is how the story unfolds. In the beginning, you found the local compliance piece particularly intimidating. Plus, you were so excited to launch your Airbnb that you just pulled the trigger, published your listing, and have continued to welcome guests for months (or years) without ever circling back to the question of short term rental regulations in your part of the world.
Let's Try This
Bite-Size Solution
Get registered with your local government.
We know. Getting an email encouraging you to engage with bureaucratic red tape is the least enjoyable type of marching order. (Nobody hangs out voluntarily at the DMV.) But we also know that in the long run, hosts need to play by the rules in order for Airbnb to continue to operate successfully.
We recently saw an article in our hometown paper lamenting the explosion of Airbnbs in certain parts of town. The neighbors’ growing frustration ended up focusing on how few of these places are properly registered with the city. It’s a fair complaint. We’ve all got to play by the rules.

Here's Your First Step
Do a little research.
Start small. But definitely start. Kick things off with just a bit of exploratory research. Search “short term rental regulation” in your city and see what you find. You might discover that there’s no regulation where you live. You might stumble upon some local news articles that point you to the right form on your local government’s website.
Or…you might know exactly which application you need to fill out. If that happens to be you, harness your Nike inspiration and just do it! We’re cheering you on.
