Pesky Problem
Your Airbnb is not located near a popular destination.
Some Airbnb hosts happen to have a primetime location. In tourist hotspots or university towns, waves of travelers arrive like clockwork. Siphon off just a few of those predictable visitors, and many hosts easily meet their goals. But there are also loads of hosts located well off the beaten path: down the gravel road, across the bay by ferry, or hours away from an airport. Is this you? If so, we’d bet worries crop up about attracting enough guests.
Let's Try This
Bite-Size Solution
Make your Airbnb the destination.
Here’s a tried and true strategy. If you’re located in a destination vacuum, your Airbnb has to be the destination itself. A fully fledged, “we’ve arrived!” location in its own right. Have you seen an Airbnb commercial lately on TV? Take note. This strategy is front and center. The Flintstones cave, the reflective pool house, the Idaho potato: all of these Airbnbs are destinations that can stand on their own two feet.
Here’s a fantastic example from our recent travels. The Grain Bin Getaway is a gorgeous Airbnb that’s literally a renovated grain bin, the brainchild of architects and superhosts Brent and Christy. This Airbnb happens to be located outside a tiny town in western Iowa. But to us, it could have been located just about anywhere. We didn’t drive all that way to see the town (although we had a lovely time exploring the area once we were there.) We booked The Grain Bin Getaway to see The Grain Bin Getaway. It was the destination. It was our vacation. And despite its rural setting, this place is booked solid.

Here's Your First Step
Identify and promote your “wow” factor.
So, now it’s your turn! To be a proper destination, you’ve got to have a hook. You need a “wow” factor that’s truly memorable, something magnetic enough to pull travelers off the interstate, away from the city centers, and into your backyard. So ask yourself: what’s my Airbnb’s wow factor? Once you’ve got your answer, make sure it’s featured prominently in your listing so potential guests can start heading your way.
