Sound Familiar?
Pesky Problem
Your guests are hangry.
That is, they are angry because they’re hungry. And worse, they just walked in the door. Your guests’ travel day has finally come to a close, and as they enter your perfectly prepared space, all they can think about is their stomach. These guests look around your place in desperate search of any form of sustenance, and come up empty handed. Not exactly the ideal first impression.
Let's Try This
Bite-Size Solution
Provide just a few snacks.
When folks arrive hungry and it’s still afternoon, there’s a good chance your guests will rebound. They’ll drop their bags, glance at your local guide, head to the nearest recommendation and chow down.
But plenty of your guests arrive late. Sometimes really late, well after all the grocery stores and restaurants have closed up shop. Unless you live in the heart of a big city surrounded by 24-hour takeout just down the stairs, we’d recommend you leave your guests a snack. This doesn’t have to be a ton, but set out just enough food that guests can ward off immediate pangs of hunger as they figure out their next steps.
If you want to go above and beyond, here are a few food related tricks we’ve loved as guests:
- buy snacks from a local shop that guests could visit again on their own
- include chilled drinks in the fridge (do you remember this brilliant hosting trick?)
- enable other amenities with your snacks, like popcorn makers, s’mores at the fire pit, etc.
- leave a little something for breakfast so guests can ease into their first full day slowly

Here's Your First Step
Create an easy routine.
Remember, you can leave the exact same snack set up for every single guest. They’ll never know it wasn’t created exclusively for them. Brainstorm items that are easy for you to implement, and then just follow your routine, again and again.
